first time working on bike. What are steps to get starter off?

If you are going to be doing a lot of work it might be worth it to buy a shop manual #99484-90.  Anyway, disconnect the battery ground.  Drain transmission oil. remove primary chain cover.  Remove two starter mounting bolts from inside the primary.  Remove positive cable from starter and depending on what exhaust you're running you probably have to remove the rear pipe to get the starter out.  That's it!
