Motorcycle Repair: 1977 650 special yamaha, mid winter, ugly head

i restored a 1977 650 special ran great one season now only one lung seems to want to work i rebuilt carbs and found out that there was no fire on right side points new and wires new it has a spot above 3000 where it wants to kick in but not at idle what could be the problem i set the timing and the gaps at 11 timing is right on what am i missing it iranb when i parked it i fired it mid winter ideld beautiful pulled batt for storage went out in early spring and ran good then lost a lung ?

Hi Joey.

 The 650 Special is just that; Special.  It has a long and notorious history of electrically related issues.  I have only ever met ONE person who didn't have any real issues with the bike, but so many others have had real issues withit.

Start by doing a bech test of the coil.  It could have failed.  There could also be a short in the wiring to the offending coil.  I know that you replaced some of the wires, but there could be an issue that you have missed which is now rearing it's ugly head.

Start with that and see what you find.
