Motorcycle Repair: Honda Goldwing starter problem, honda goldwing, chain and sprocket

Question
Had a look at the manuals - it looks like an engine out job to check the starter motor clutch as the drive chain and sprocket attaching the motor to gearbox are in good nick.
Has anyone else had failure of the starter clutch?
Thanks for your time,
Kate

Hi Chris,
Just replaced the starter motor on a @76 Wing and it worked fine yesterday - used it 10 + times with no hassle. This morning, put on freshly charged battery and the starter motor is spinning, but the engine isn't turning over. Swapped battery from another Wing and the symptom's the same. Any ideas?

Hi Kate.
This sounds like the problem is in the engine side of the starter, in the starter gears where they couple up to the starter motor.  Check through your repair manual for the starting mechanism and see what you have that may be broken.

Start there and see what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.

Answer
Hi Kate.
In 26 years of riding and fixing my own machines, as well as helping buddies and others with their's, I have heard of very few things going wrong on the "Wing".  It is one of the most bullet-proof bikes on the road.  I even know of a gentleman on the Gulf coast, here in Fl, that has over 500,000 miles on his.

However, things do wear out over time and usage and sometimes it is something that we have little control over preventing.

You will need to get in there and inspect the mechanism properly, unfortunately.  I recommend letting a properly outfitted shop do the work, unless you feel confident enough and have all of the required tools to do it yourself.

Good luck and ride safe.
