Motorcycle Repair: starter problems with v-star 1100, starter problems, starter button

the starter spins, but doesn't engage. i removed the starter, verified that it turned freely when starter button pressed... however, there is no "in and out" movement ... is it supposed to move in and out like a car or outboard motor starter?
if so, can u give me fundamental directions of repairing the starter unit, or do i need to take it to the shop??
your help is GREATLY appreciated!!!  :)

Get the manual and follow the direction in the starter section. You'll need to dissemble the start and verify what is hanging up or damaged so you can determined to repair it yourself or get a replacement. You will no doubt need the manual again some day...
