I need to replace my drive chain. But I need to know who to remove the old one it is a solid chain. No master link. and how to put on the new one. It is rivet type with 0-ring. the directions that came with the new chain says you need a special tool to flare the ends. I don't have that tool. Is there another way to flare the ends? I have a tool to press fit the sideplates onto the pins.

Hi Randy.

Unfortunately, one of the realities of working on your own machine is that you need the right tools for a few different jobs.

This is one of those cases.  To do the job right, you really need the correct tools.  You cannot take chances with a drive chain.  If it is done wrong there are 2 possibilities if your repair (using the wrong tools) fails;

1) The chain comes off and leaves you stranded somewhere.

2) The chain comes off in a catastrophic way and gets caught in the rear wheel, causing an accident.

Get the right tool and do the job right.

Good luck and ride safe.

Answer
Hi Randy.

 In theory, you should be able to get them at the local bike shop or dealership.
However, since things don't always work out that way, you can get them online at;

www.jcwhitney.com

www.denniskirk.com

Those are the 2 that I normally recommend.

Good luck and ride safe.
