do I have to remove the jet to check the size? Is it marked on it?

-----Question-----
I have a 1975 ironhead sportster w/unknown engine work.  It is running straight tube upswept fishtail exhaust.  I have tried to adjust the S&S super E carb the way I have read here several times, but it seems that when the bike is running smoothly it is running rich and fouling plugs.  I even noticed some flames shooting from the front head exhast pipe.  Am I adjusting wrong or could I have a bad coil or something else? Is there an at home test that I could to check some other things?

Because you are running straight pipes it probably is running too rich and all the adjustment in the world isn't going to help.  You have to jet it correctly.  What size main and idle jets are you running?  Your intermediate jet should be .028 to .029 and your main jet should be between a 62 and a 68.  Check the main jet first.  That's usually the one that's too big.  Idle mixture screw should still be 1 to 1-1/2 turns out.

Yes it's marked on the bottom face or one of the hex sides.

Answer
Those should be fine.  Your intermediate jet is a .0265 which is almost a couple thousands smaller than the .028.  Maybe your float is set too high and you're leaking gas into the carb throat?  You never said what you have for an air filter.  You should be running a high flow air filter.  Anything with a K&N type filter.  Even a dirty air filter will cause the rich running condition.  Is your timing right on?  Are the push rods too tight?  Try running some exhaust torque cones?  Do the plugs look good if you run without an air filter?  Then you know your filter sucks. (Or actually isn't sucking enough)  Sorry, can't think of anything else right now.  This is like your doctor trying to diagnose your illness over the phone.  That carb may just be too big for the bike if it's an 883.
