Motorcycle Repair: 2002 xr80r idle problem, fuel lines, fuel system

Question
just bought a used 2002 xr80r that was not used for 8 mo or so.  It starts with choke on on second kick from cold, but screams and then stalls when the choke is decreased.  When warmed up, idles very high.  Only very small turn to idle screw makes it stall also.  Any carburator tricks that will solve this problem?

Answer
Hi Chris.

Pull and clean the carb and fuel lines.  Pull and reseal the tank.

The fact that the bike sat for so long means that any and all fuel in it became what we call "varnish".  It gums up all of the fuel system.  If you do not take the correct measures, then the residue left in the system will gum things up again.

Good luck and ride safe.
