Motorcycle Repair: strange sound, honda cbr 600, clutch springs

Question
hello Chris,
I have a 1988 honda CBR 600, and i'm getting a chattering sound from the clutch housing. I changed the clutch springs and checked the clutch plates and clutch housing and chattering still there. Seems to do it when first started, maybe a couple minutes. Noise also gets louder when clutch lever is pulled in. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi John.

This sounds a lot like one of those things that is unique to the bike.  it sounds as if it is a part that is loose til the engine heats up and the parts expand.
It could be nothing or it could be something.  If the bike has always done this, then ignore it.  If, however, this is a new development, then get it into a shop to get it looked at personally by a mechanic.

My thinking, if it is a new sound, is that it could be a broken shift shaft.  This isn't always a critical problem, but could be a problem down the road.

Sorry I can't help further.

Good luck and ride safe.
