Motorcycle Repair: S&S Accellerator Adjustment, air fuel mixture, harley shop

Question
The following response has me puzzled. When Johnny said shut off accell pump do you think he meant back off the screw? And when he said to turn the screw out until it doesn't stumble do you think he meant turn it in (clockwise)? Any help would be great....Thanks.

STP

you need to first shut off accell pump to thr right of the carb and then adjust the brass air fuel mixture screw . tun it in untill it starts to die and then back it out 1/2 turn Now wick the throttler it should stunble. Now turn out the accel pump screw 1 full turn and wick the throttle if it stumbles turn it out 1/2 turn and test again keep doing this untill it has a instance responce.   you can buy the black wrickeal paint at the harley shop.  Johnny

Answer
Start with the MIXTURE screw at a setting of 1 1/2 turns out (counterclockwise) from the gently bottomed-out position.  You decrease accel. pump action by turning the ACCEL. PUMP screw in or clockwise.  Just look at the action of it and you will see that turning the screw in or clockwise causes the pump rod to be contacted much later as you start turning the throttle.  Just make sure the accel. pump rod that sticks out of the little black boot does not contact the flat lever while you are adjusting the idle mixture.  To adjust the idle mixture you should start with the 1 1/2 turns out and with the engine warmed up, turn the screw in until it starts to stumble and then back it out 1/4 to 1/2 turn.  If it is set correctly, the engine will start to stumble again if you back it OUT another 1/4 to 1/2 turn.  Don't forget you need to have the idle speed set at a good idle to get the best adjustment.  Don't set your idle to low, even though it sounds cool, or you will have hesitation and hard starting.  After your idle is set, start backing out the accel. pump screw while cracking the throttle until it stops hesitating. Good Luck.
