Motorcycle Repair: 1985 Harley soft tail, adjustable pushrods, rocker boxes

Question
Mike, Can you recommend where I can purchase the adjustable push rods you mentioned?; and what would be the adjustment procedure.  I have ordered a service manual but I wasn't sure if the manual would cover adjustable push rods.
Thanks, Andy

-----Question-----
Mike, When I ride this bike about 30 miles it starts making a pecking noise in the engine. I can stop and let it idle 3 or 4 minutes and the noise goes away.  Is this a lifter? If so, can I replace the lifters without removing the engine and dissassembling it?  Thanks, Andy
-----Answer-----
You probably have a lifter that is getting ready to go out. You can replace them without removing the motor. You either need to remove the rocker boxes so you can get the pushrods out or you can cut them out and replace them with adjustable pushrods. Once you have them removed, remove the rocker boxes and the lifters will slide out he bottom of them

Answer
The service manual will not have the procedure for doing the adjustable pushrods since harleys didnt come with them.
You can get the adjustables at about any bike shop, even harley dealers will have them. Most have different ways to adjust, but should come with directions on what the manufacture recommends for an adjustment
