Motorcycle Repair: Honda CT 90 chargeing, honda ct90, honda ct70

Question
Hey Mark, Generator puts out 25v ac @ idle, 90v+ ac @ high rpm. Voltage out of rectifier, 17v dc @ idle and skyrocketed with rpm. We have a good charged battery, new rectifier, grounds are good, all wires inspected and terminal ends cleaned. Is that typical ac voltage output for the generator? Seem a bit high for the higher rpm's. Will that high of voltage toast a 25 amp rectifier? Could there be a problem with the generator? We are trying to get the charging voltage to a reasonable 7.5v or so. Thanks for any input you or the other expert guys may have.    Mike

Answer
Hi Mike,

Sounds as if the generator is healthy. I suspect other charging system components are weak or defective. Refer to this question and answer by expert Bill Silver:
