Motorcycle Repair: 1998 FLHR-I Road King, air fuel mixture, dual fire

Question
Dear Mike,

There's a lot of aftermarket products out there in regards to the ignition system vis-a-vis performance coil (both single fire/dual fire, spark plugs cable,ignition module etc. However, most of these products are catered for Harleys using carburators. My questions are:

(1) what is the ignition set up of my existing models, is it using dual fire or single fire ignition;

(2) can the current ignition set up be upgraded; and

(3) what would be the best set up for the upgrade.

Regards & Merry Christmas.

Answer
Being stock your ignition is duel fire. On the upgrade the answer is yes and no. You can ad moduals to your current ignition which will give you a choice to change the settings. the problem is without anyway to check the air/fuel mixture you are trying different settings without knowing the results. The only thing you will know if its running better or not, but you will not know if its running perfect. There are additions that you can make, but then you would need a laptop or computer to do the work.
Your best bet, to get the best from your bike, is to take it to a shop which has a way to change the settings on your current EMC. That is what I do in my shop. Then I can check the air/fuel mixture through the RPM range and change the settings throughout the range
