Motorcycle Repair: 03 Kaw. 636 front chain sprocket, left hand thread, metal tabs

Question
I am replacing the sprockets on my bike. The front sprocket nut looks like a special nut. Is there a tool for removing it,or you just use a wrench? also is this a left hand thread? Any tips would be a big help. Thank You.  Ron.

Answer
Hi Ron.

Generally speaking, the nut which holds the sprocket (both front and rear) is a normal nut, except that it has a reverse thread.  It will also have one or more metal tabs bent up against the flat sides of the nut, which are there to prevent the nut from loosening up.  You need to bend the metal tabs flat to remove the nut and when you put it back on, bend them back into place again.

Good luck and ride safe.
