Motorcycle Repair: 1981 Z50R no spark, spark plug wire, overflow problem

Question
Thanks. The coil was a brand new one in the package that came with the bike when I bought it. I unscrewed the spark plug boot from the coil wife and reattached it. It all looked good. I don't have the manual for this bike.

-----Question-----
I am finishing a restoration on a Honda 50. I had it running with good spark but my carb was overflowing.I put a carb kit in to solve the overflow problem and now I can't get any spark. I replaced the points and checked all the wires for good connections.I used a multimeter to make sure I was getting a complete circuit form the on off switch to the stator and the coil. I cleaned the plug but still no spark. What else can I do?

Hi Randy.
The bike is 25 years old; have you done any direct testing of the coil as per the instructions in the repair manual?

It is possible that the coil just decided to fail at this time or possibly there is a short in the spark plug wire.

Start with that and see what you find.

Good luck and ride safe.

Answer
Hi Randy.

In order for you to properly proceed with repair of this issue you really need the repair manual.  It has the testing proceedures and specs for every part the bike.

As long as the coil is good and all of the connections and wiring is good, then it has to be a component issue.

Now one thing to consider, as I said before, is that the bike is 25 years old.  That also means that if the wiring is the original wiring, then there is the very real possibility of an intermittent short.  One does not find those through normal testing means.  They can only be found when the problem they create pops up, which can be a difficult thing to track.

Good luck and ride safe.
