Hi Luke.

First thing to do is to (if you haven't already) get the repair manual.

Then start by checking the ignition system, from power to plugs, for shorts, grounded wiring or faulty components.  If the problem is the CDI, then you will be stuck with having to get a new one.

Once you have gone through all of that, then you could check the manifolds for cracks, which means vacuum leaks.  If there are cracks in the manifolds, then replace them.  A small vacuum leak won't necessarily show up as a problem until you start running higher revs.  And sometimes, not even then.

Start with that and see what you get.
Good luck and ride safe.

Answer
Hi Luke.

As far as a replacement tank, there are few options with a bike that old.

1) Have the old tank repaired and repainted.

2) Check for motorcycle salvage yards locally as well as online.  You may still have to have it repainted, at the least, but that isn't too difficult to either do or have done.

I really don't know of any specific salvage yards to check, but you can always google it and come up with plenty.

Good luck and ride safe.
