Motorcycle Repair: dyna will not start when cold outside, sensers, cold temps

Question
Mike, Thanks for the reply. As a follow-up, this is not a new carb. It has been on the bike for 50k miles and this problem is just now poping up. The timing I am told is not adjustable since it is part of the ignition module. Do you have any other ideas? How does a crank position sensor act when it is going bad? Is there any way to check it without a code reader?
Thanks
Matt

SInce you stated that your plugs are black then its running to rich and needs rejetted. With black or fouled plugs a bike is hard to start. Also, check yout timing to make sure its not to advanced since that will also make it hard to start
Good luck and happy riding

Answer
If your crank position senser was going bad the bike wouldnt run right at all times.
To check any of the sensers you would have to have a dianostic done on the bike. Its the only way to tell for sure.
When the temp is cold try giving the bike a couple shots of gas with the throttle before starting it and seeif that doesnt help.
Also, since you said the carb has been on there for that long and your plugs are black you might have a weak coil. Once the coil and plug wires start going bad it will fould your plugs and make it hard to start.
Good luck and happy riding
