-----Question-----
1980 Lowrider, New Crane hi 4 ignition and coil, Super E, Kick only. This bike is really hard to start, took 3 guys and 45 minutes at the Harley shop to get it going, they seem to think it's the mouse trap letting to much oil in crankcase. They did a compression test(good), replaced a clutch disk and adjusted the carb. STILL HARD(impossible) TO START. Took it to the local shovelhead guy and he says it's almost not going to be the mousetrap causing it not to kick over. Couldn't get it started there. He said to look at the ignition system or carb or possibly a loose wire. It runs great once I can get it started, but just crazy to start. I'm thinking the ignition is the culprit. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Tom

Do you hve hydrolic lifters or solids?
Mike

Answer
First, check to see if you have solid lifters. If you do, make sure they are adjusted right. If they are to tight if will make the bike hard to start.
Next, check your timing, to far advanced and its hard to start.
Finally, try starting it this way. Turn the choke on and kick the bike over a couple of times with the ignition switch off. Now turn the switch on and kick it hard. That way you are getting fuel into the cylinders before trying to start it
Good luck and happy riding
