Motorcycle Repair: 1985 virago 750, stator coil, virago 750

Question
what is the procedure for checking stator output?

Answer
Hi Kurt.
When checking to see if the stator is producing enough power, place your multimeter leads on the battery terminals.  At idle, it should be producing right about 12.5-13VDC.  Slowly increase the rpms to about 4000rpm and see what the voltage changes to.  It should increase to about 15-16VDC or more.  it should drop back down as the engine returns to idle.  If the power output does not reach a minimum of 12VDC at any speed, then the the stator is in need of replacement.  If the bike has near or over 50,000 miles, then the stator coil needs to be changed anyway.  Refer to the repair manual for the exact specs on the charging system.
