Motorcycle Repair: 83 750 Maxim Stalls When Engaging Clutch, clutch basket, surface rust

Question
Collin,

After staring bike (after charging the battery), I got on, engaged clutch (all the way), and intended to take down the block.  However, when I shifted to 1st, it died immediately.  I tried several more times, and each time, the bike would die.  I noticed during this exercise that it shifted "hard" or, "small jump" before dying.

Thanks again,

- Scott Nichols

Greetings Collin,

I recently charged and started my 750 Maxim after sitting for 2 weeks.  When I went to take for a ride, it stalled after engaging first gear.

Please advise,

Thank you,

Ok, I need u to b as specific as possible.  Was the stall caused by it jumping as if the clutch were bad, or did it stall due to fuel delivery issues?  Let me know and good luck!

Answer
Ok, my answer is going to assume that when u parked the bike this wasn't an issue.  What happens with these older bikes during a period of rest is that the metal plates in the clutch basket get a small amount of surface rust on them.  Normally u can clear this up with a bit of riding but you're issue isn't allowing u to do so.  There r 2 things u can do here.  1:  Get the bike rolling and then engage first gear.  Ride it for a while and while shifting let the clutch out slowly.  If that doesn't clear it up u r now at the second thing.  2:  Clutch basket needs removed and the plates need to b resurfaced.  It's always possible that u need a new clutch as well.  If I'm wrong, and this was a bit of an issue b4 the bikes 2 week break let me know!
