Steering Column Repair: Loose steering column, shift linkage, loose pin

Question
I have a 1985 el camino. One morning I went to leave and as I applied the break and attempted to shift it into gear it was loose. It just slid up and down and won't go into any gear. I heard someone say its a loose pin or something but would love an answer for this to fix it myself. Funds are low and can't afford a mechanic.

Answer
The shift linkage on your vehicle is all mechanical (no cables).  The rod from the transmission connects under the hood to the steering column right by the firewall.  It's held in by a single clevis pin.  If that rusted away or came out, it would cause the problem you described.
You need to have someone move the selector while you watch that linkage.  If it's moving then the problem is under the car with more linkage rods similar to what you just saw under the hood.  If it's not, then the shift tube inside the column has broken and you will need to replace the column (or overhaul it--big job)

I hope this helps

Good luck
