Motorcycle Repair: Harley 1990 FLSTC, clutch assembly, flstc

Question
Ok I went to start my bike today and they regulator plug were it plugs into the block FRIED BAD...I mean both ends are melted( I saw the smoke so I shut it down).  How hard is it to  change the alternator plug in the block?  Do I need to change the alternator?  Should I just go ahead and tear it apart and replace the whole ignition system?  It is my original bike and still love her.  I am a shade tree mech and dont want to start something I shouldn't.  TY for your time.

Answer
If the plug fried then you have a short in the stator (what your calling a alternator). You will have to remove the primary cover, motor sprocket and clutch assembly to get to it. If the stator shorted then the regulator might have shorted too.
Good luck and happy riding
