Nissan Repair: Intermittent 96 Sentra Start, fuse panel, nissan dealership

Question
Sometimes our 96 Sentra will not start. We had trouble about 2 months ago, was told it was an electrical problem and had work on the computer done. Then, about 3 weeks later, same problems and the fuse panel was replaced computer reprogramed - so we thought we were in good shape. It ran fine for 2 - 2 1/2 months. We have had no other engine problems to speak of thus far, either.

It first didn't start again about three weeks ago after a rain storm (we live in Las Vegas - so as this was unusual, we thought maybe it had something to do with the new car problems).

As described before by others - we get power to lights, radio, ect - but only a click when turning the key. It may be a day or an hour before the car will start again - we never know.

We love our car and don't want to get rid of it - but this problem is causing much stress as we never know when the car may start.

We just picked it up from the Nissan dealership service dept - and they told us since it started everytime they tried - they couldn't determine the source of the problem. They even ran it through the car wash to see if mostiture was an issue.

Thanks so much for trying to help us! We appreciate it! I've read through the website and found some ideas to start with - turning the key rapidly?

I have a feeling it may be the starter ... but I don't want to just start replacing random parts ...

Thanks!

Answer
Laurie,

If you are just getting a click when you attempt to start I would run the car through the gears, if it is an automatic, while turning the key.  That is, shift from park to neutral and back while the key is turned.  If it is a manual push in the clutch in and out a couple of times while the key is turned.  Be sure the car is in neutral first.  You could have a simple problem like a safety switch going out.  Try that and email me back.  Heck, I live in Las Vegas too so you can email me at vonsudderth@hotmail.com and let me have alook at it come night after work or on the weekend.
