Motorcycle Repair: 220 bayou, voltage reg, volt meter

Question
we have a 220 bayou that is acting really funny.  we cleaned the carb and installed a kit.  it will start but not idle very well.  it seems to back fire.  when you give it gas it seems to bog down after 1/2 throttle.  weve kind of ruled out the carb and are looking at the electrical system.  the battery is not getting any charge, could a voltage regulator cause running problems.  I would like to test the stator but have no readings to go buy or know which wires to test. any information would be appreciated

Answer
put the battery on a good charge then crank it up if id revs good that means your voltage reg. or stator is not keeping up with the battery, to test just get a volt meter at any auto parts .while bike is running put volt meter on battery post if you get at least 12.5 volts then you know the voltage reg is working if you get nothing or less then thers yur problem .ok if you nee more help im here ok
