Motorcycle Repair: 1984 Honda Nighthawk trans, 1984 honda nighthawk, defective gears

Question
I have a 1984 Nighthawk 700 S, 2nd and 4th gear both will not stay engaged under any riding condition. All other gear are fine under light or heavy load. Do I need a trans rebuild or just a clutch..

Answer
Hi Brian,

The transmission should be inspected and defective gears repaired or replaced.

Trying to mate slower spinning sliding gears with very high spinning fixed gears is hard on the transmission. If the transmission is slipping out of gears, the gear's dogs and cogs are rounded (worn) and must be replaced.
