Motorcycle Repair: electrical problem with honda 400ex, honda 400ex, starter solenoid


Question
what should i do?  i'm trying to start my 400ex, when i press the starter button nothing happens.  how can i figure out were the problem is? i have a charged battery, but i don't know if its the starter, starter button, or any other electrical item. i checked the fuse and that good. i tried to find the problem but all i have is a simple tester that lights up when there power.

Hi Koe,

Get a copy of the repair manual. Follow the troubleshooting procedures and perform electrical diagnosis.

Check wiring for loose connectors and broken wires.

Check battery cable ends for clean and tight connections.

Battery must be fully charged and in good condition.

Trace voltage from battery along circuit until there's no power- and the source of the problem. You'll need a wiring diagram to learn the circuits; comes with repair manuals.

Check starter button contacts.

Check starter solenoid for proper operation. Check internal conatcts.

Check starter motor brushes for excessive wear and defects.

Check starter motor clutch.
