Motorcycle Repair: Low Oil Pressure, oil pressure gauge, low oil pressure

Question
Hello,

I have a 1998 1340 Evolution engine with a stock oil pump. The engine has 14,000 miles on it. I have an oil pressure gauge mounted on the engine. I am concerned about my oil pressure. When I start it up it has about 22psi of oil pressure at around 80 degrees outside temperature. As the bike is warming up while riding it the oil pressure drops to around 14psi. After the bike is at operating temperature (200 degrees)the oil pressure drops below 10psi. At idle the oil pressure is not reading anything. The engine stays at 200 degrees and there is no unusuall engine noise. I have ridden several hundred miles with these oil pressure readings with no problems. I have already tried another oil pressure gauge and it reads the same thing. Do you think that my oil pump cavity is scored or? The oil is returning to the tank. I was getting around 30psi at cruising speed several months ago. Thanks

Answer
You have either a scored pump cavity or a weak oil pressure spring. You can purchace a heavier spring and start with that, but if that doesnt solve the problem then you need to remove the oil pump and do a n inspection.
Good luck and happy riding
