Motorcycle Repair: 1996 Yamaha royal start shifter problems, bikebandit com, yamaha royal star

Question
Hello Mark, I have a 1996 Yamaha royal star with 8,000 miles on it. I have had zero problems since I bought it new. I have not ridden this bike much as you can tell but change the oil and filter with the correct Yamaha oil every year. I went on a 40 mile ride when the bike worked perfectly and I parked it in the garage. The next time I went out to ride I could not get it into 1st gear. Second and 3rd seem to work but nothing else. I am stumped as it seems to have "just happened" and I know ( hope) it is something simple. I checked the shifter linkage and it seems sloppy but it has always seemed sloppy. It feels like the shifter is hitting something inside of the trans.
Any help would be appreciated before I bring this to a dealer and get hosed.
Thank You

Answer
Hi David,

I suspect a shift shaft spring or linkage may have come off or is not moving properly. The problem may be something other.

I would need to inspect the operation of the parts for accurate diagnosis.

View the parts at "www.yamaha-motor.com" and "www.bikebandit.com" Both have parts microfiche. Bike Bandit displays prices of their parts.

Consider removing the left case cover and inspect the linkages for evidence of defects. I think you'll find the problem.

I know of no such common problem with the Star series.

Respectfully,
