Motorcycle Repair: type oil, yamaha maxim, oil molecules

Question
Hi.
I have a 1982 Yamaha Maxim XS400.
Which oil type should I use when I
give it an oil change..
10W-30?
10W-40?
Thanks.

Answer
Arthur, the most important factor is that you use a "motorcycle" oil, instead of automotive oils. The oil in a motorcycle also lubricates the transmission gears, which cause "shearing" of the oil molecules. This requires special formulation of the oil for motorcycle application.

Depending on the way you use your bike and the season, you can use either 10-30 or 10-40. If you live in a warm/hot climate and run 20 miles on the freeway every day, then you may have to go to 20-50 for maximum protection. Overall, 10-30 is sufficient. Check with your Yamaha Dealer to see if they have a service manual for your machine, that designates the recommended weight. An owner's manual would have the same information.
