Motorcycle Repair: wont idel, suzuki intruder, katana 600

Question
I have a 1997 Katana 600. It has sat for about two years getting
cranked from time to time to keep things operating. I wanted to
sell it this summer but could not keep it running. It has new oil,
plugs and battery. When I first start it, it runs kind of rough and
slugish. After it warms up this improves some but it will not stay
ideling. I unpluged the hose that runs from the fuel cock to the
carb to create a vaccum leak. The bike would now idel at 1,000
RPM. I then put my finger over the hole in the carb to stop the leak.
The engine increased to 1,600 and seem to rev much better. Once I
put the hose back on, the engine dies. Any idea what my problem
may be? Thanks, George

Answer
