Motorcycle Repair: carbs?, gumout, pinhole

Question
Collin,
I recently bought a 1979 Suzuki GS550. It runs and accelerates reasonably well up to about 40 mph, but after that there is almost no acceleration and after I get it going about that speed for awhile the engine will just sort of poop out on me and die. I figured it must be something with the carbs and I did the whole gumout thing which seemed to help a bit but it still struggles. Are the carbs the problem and do they need a more in depth cleaning or is something else going on? Thanks!
Andrew

Answer
K, gumout in the gas is a very bad idea in a bike.  Next of all it definatly sounds like the carbs.  Thoroughly clean them, but DO NOT seperate them from one another, but do remove them from the bike.  Make sure the jets r clean, if there's just a pinhole to see thru on them then they'll need cleaned too.  Good luck and be careful with those jets, u dont wanna bore them at all or u will really hate your machine!  Let me know.
