Motorcycle Repair: replacing handlebars & controls, torx bolts, ape hangers

Hey Mike,

I would like to know the steps in replaceing my handlebars and hand controls and cables, and things not to screw up.  I have a 2006 road king classic and I plan to put 12" ape hangers on. I know that I need to extend the wiring but I don't know the gauge. I would also like to know how to get to the bars.

Any info will help.

Not only will you have to extend the wires but you will have to replace the clutch cable, brake line and throttle and idle cable.
The bars are under a cover in the center of the forks. remove the cover and there are 4 bolts that hold the bars on.
To remove the controls you will see torx bolts holding the controls on. remove them and the controls will slip off. the left grip will have to be cut off and replaced.
