Motorcycle Repair: Loose Oil Filter, hand tap, heli coil

Question
I have a 1991 FL. I recently bought the bike. I noticed my oil filter (under the tranny) was hanging by the hoses. Upon inspection, I found the filter had been held up by tie-wraps! The mount was stripped. I know the threads are left-hand & I suspect someone before me didn't. My question, can I drill & re-tap the filter mount with a normal right-hand tap? Is it necessary to have the lefty threads? Thanks,  Eddie

Answer
Yes you can drill and tap the mount. I would drill and add a heli-coil to the hole. Then you are back to the orgional size of the hole. I dont remember the hole being left handed threads. There is no reason for it to be left handed as there is no right handed pressure against it. So go with right handed threads.
Good luck and happy riding
