Motorcycle Repair: pod air filters, honda cb750k, pod air filters

Question

On various web sites and forums there seems to be conflicting
opinions on  useability of "K & N" style pod air filters. I have a
'77 Yamaha xs 750 2D Triple and a '79 Honda CB750K 4. Some
riders express concern about rain. Others have ridden through
torrential downpours without a hiccup. It makes a noticeable
improvement in "cages". I understand I may need to change
main jets  and adust needles for richer flow. How much of a
larger main jet is typical, and do you have a pro/con opinion on
pod filters? Thanks for your time, and your help in keeping us on
the road.

Answer
Hi Chris,

Installing pod filters have advantages and disadvantages.

What is your desired goal- or what do you intend to use the motorcycle for? Racing, communting, or do you just desire that awesome throaty header sound for cruising around town?

Know what you want and then learn what is necessary to purchase and install to reach the desired results.

A Stage I or II jet kit with K&N filters and a header are common for street use.

Tuning will be necessary to correct the air-fuel mixtures. Jet sizes vary depending upon the variables; elevation, temperature, etc... Jet kits get the mix pretty colse and are easily installed.

If you want my tech files on the topic, reply with your eamil address as requested and explained in my instructions. I return numerous files to assist you with the decision and installation.

Respectfully,
