Motorcycle Repair: removal of timing cap, vt500c, honda shadow

Question
Hi Mark,

This is a very silly question, but I was all set to do a valve clearance adjustment on my 1984 Honda Shadow VT500C yesterday, but I could not remove the timing cap on the crankcase cover. My husband helped me and he could not get it either. Very frustrating.

Any suggestions? Unless one has a giant screwdriver, I am at a loss...

Thanks! My bike really needs a tune up, it sounds like a swiss watch!

Answer
Hi Lynne,

Those covers can be frustrating. You can purchase a tool designed to remove those pesky little covers. Having a tool tip that fits the slot makes the difference.

Once removed, apply a bit of anti-seize to the threads to prevent corrosion from forming and causing future problems.

Visit the following link to view the tool. It's the last tool pictured. A Y-shaped tool.

You may find like and similar tools on the internet at a better price. Try searching with various keywords of timing cover tool, three way tool, etc...
