Motorcycle Repair: Kawaski Speedometor Problem, wheel hub, shively

Question
My bike is a Kawaski 1500 year 2000

I had a problem the other day with my speedo
When I stopped my bike I saw that the speedo was reading 30mph then went to 0
When riding it go's sometimes from 50 jumps to 80 then runs fine.
I took off the cable to see if it was loose or damaged.
I did not see any problems with the cable.
Can it be that I need a new cable and just can't see the problem or you think I need a new speedo.

Thanks
Ken

Answer
Hi Ken,

If the cable appears to be in good condition, the problem may be a worn or defective speedometer or speedo drive unit at the front wheel hub.

Inspect for obvious defects and smooth operation. Compare with known good units. Repair of replace accordingly.
