Motorcycle Repair: YZ426F Overheating, trailriding, race bike

Question
I have recently purchased a 2001 426F.  I mostly trail ride with my son and I noticed that the bike gets pretty hot at low speeds or even idling.  I have added an overflow resevoir so that the coolant isn't lost.  Would rejetting the carb to richen the mixture help reduce the heat.  I realize that the bike may have some performance issues but I am more worried about the bike in this Texas heat.

Answer
Craig,

All the big 4-strokes get very hot, but it is rare that they overheat.

If you are doing mostly low speed trailriding though, the radiators are not getting the required airflow, esp. on an MX race bike such as yours which is not geared for low speeds.

First thing, rejetting will not help.  What I suggest is altering your riding style.  Whats most important is enjoying your time with your son, but everynow and then - cruise in a high gear, low rpms but higher speed, say 30-40ish and get some airflowing.  At these speeds even pull in the clutch and coast to cool her off.

Secondly, you can try a tooth or two smaller sprocket in the rear which will lower your rpms.

I wouldn't worry too much, like I said they all run hot.  Take breaks in the shade, coast at speed, and change the sprocket.

Good Luck!
