Motorcycle Repair: speedometer cable removal, speedometer cable, southern cruisers

Question
I have a 1989 FLHTC Harley.  When we were driving
to Memphis from Ontario for the St. Jude's Children's Hospital Ride for Southern Cruisers the speedometer just quit working.

How do I remove/check the cable or drive unit on the front wheel to get the speedometer working again?

Your help and advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you!
Bruce (a happy Harley rider)

Answer
First thing you need to do it find which one the problem is. remove the headlight so you can got your had inside the fairing. unscrew the cable from the speedo. You need to lift the bike up so the front wheel is off the ground and spin the front tire. Is the cable inside the speedo housing turning? If not then remove the cable from the drive unit. it screws on. Check both ends of the cable for breakage. If the cable is good then the drive unit is bad. you have to remove the axle the get to the drive unit.
Good luck and happy riding
