Motorcycle Repair: 2003 Dyna Wide Glide Charging, ac volts, couple buddies

Question
Hello Mike, I have a 2003 Dyna Wide Glid and am having issues with the battery charging. The other day it started fine and we rode about 70 miles stopped started back up and went about 60 more when i went to start it after about 45 minutes there was nothing so i had a couple buddies push start me so we could make it home. I figured it was just a dead battery so i swapped it out of a freinds bike to trouble shoot and after about a 30 minute ride I shut it off and it barely had enough juice to get me running again. Once the battery went back into its origanal bike it worked fine. I cheked all wires and connections and they look ok so my next guess is Stator or regulator But i am unsure as how to check them i have a volt meter to use but your assistance would be greatley apreciated.
Thanks  James

Answer
First thing you need to do is make sure you are not charging. Start the bike and at the battery with a volt meter you should get around 13.5 volts at 2000RPM. If not then you need to test the stator.
Unplug the regulator from teh stator. With a OHM meter check for ground at eh stator plug. If its grounded the stator is bad. Start the bike. At the stator plug you should get around 60 volts at 2000RPM. the is AC volts not DC.
If the stator passes the testes then your regulator is bad
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
