Motorcycle Repair: Maintenance and Performance issues, rear sprockets, restrictive exhaust

Question
Hi Mark,

(1) I have a Suzuki Maruader GZ125 and its speed does not exceed 80km/h even openned full throttle. The speed will not drop to 60-70km/h if going up a slop. Can this be imporved or it's already achieve this bike (GZ125)'s limit (from the motorshop). I have cleaned the carburator already.

(2) The chain lock is in the max position (no more room to play) and now the chain is a bit sagging. Should I cut shorten the chain and re-tension it?

Answer
Hi Leong,

I recommend having a tune-up (complete-service) as suggested in the Owner's Manual periodic maintenance table.

Performance may be improved by installing performance parts such as a less restrictive exhaust, air filter, and carb kit, if available for this model.

The chain needs to be replaced. You may be able to cut the chain short to restore adjustment, though this is not recommended.

Anytime the chain is replaced, the front and rear sprockets should be replaced with the chain as a set. Old sprockets will quickly wear a new chain, and vice-versa.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
