Motorcycle Repair: special tools needed, steering wheel puller, hub puller

Question
I have 1985 fxrs 1340 cc belt drive 5 speed model.
I tested, per the manual, my charging system, the result is a bad
stator.
i have already removed the primary cover, but i now find that it
seems i need a special hub puller for the clutch.
I do own a snap-on steering wheel puller, and I thought it might
work to remove the hub. No luck.
I have been looking on the web sites for special tools, such as
Jims tool site and i dont see why the steering wheel puller would
not work.
i am reluctant to put too much strain on the puller as I do not
want to damage anything.
From research i have done, it seems the hub and flywheel are on
a tapered shaft?
Is there a keyway?
have you found any other tools that may work on place of a
special tool? If and when I get this baby apart,I want to replace
any and all seals and gaskets I can access.
can you give me a list of all gaskets and seals I should purchase
to do this job right? Also, do i have to remove the inner primary
to replace the stator?
If indeed i remove the inner primary, are ther additional seals
and or gaskets I should replace?
Thanks
jim k.

Answer
The clutch does have a keyway on the shaft and the clutch housing pulls hard. As long as you can pull evenly you should be able to pull ot off with the puller you have.
You will also need to pull the inner primary to get to the stator. When you have it off replace the o-ring between the motor and inner primary as well as the seal between the inner primary and the tran main shaft.
Good luck and happy riding
