Motorcycle Repair: Honda Trail 90, K3, honda trail 90, motorcycle mechanic

Question
1971 Honda CT 90 with 2300 miles.  My experience with
automatic clutch Honda's is that when the gear shift lever if held
up or down, the transmission is temporarily in neutral.  This
Honda CT engages immediately when the shift lever is actuated.
This occurs with both up-shifting and down-shifting.   If I hold
the lever down/up after shifting/down-shifting, it has no effect;
the engine and transmission remain engaged.  What is the
reason/cause of this?  Also, the shift from 1st gear to 2nd gear
requires much more foot pressure, and is more noisy, than the 2
to 3 and 3 to 4 shifts.   What do you think?  The bike is all
original and runs like a top, except for the annoying
transmission thing.  I cringe to think something deep inside the
engine is in need of repair...
If I need to investigate inside, should I leave the work to a
motorcycle mechanic?
Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Elizabeth,

Even with four years at Honda, I had little exposure to the CT90's. My experience is with larger street and racing motorcycles.

I've found a very good resource for the CT90:

www.littlehonda.com/ct90k0parts/ct90k0plindex.htm

You can view parts microfiche at the above site. I cringe at the site of the transmissions in this little engine. LOL

IMO... I think you should inquire with a Honda dealer 'experienced' with the CT's and ask for a written estimate of repairs.

They should diagnose the probelm and provide you with an estimate of parts and labor. An estimate usually costs about an hour of the shop's flat-rate service rate.

If they make a mistake, it's on them. If you make a mistake, it'll be very expensive to correct.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
