i've been having trouble w/ the starter. 93 flhs-  32000 miles the starter will spin some time it will ingage some time not. now it just spends i findly figured out what a jack bolt was thanks to this site!  got the starter off, bench check it (battery was a little weak ) but it spun and the selanod kicked out check all the splines and sping there's no bad teeth just a little ware onthe out side edge of the bendex i figure this is normal (like a car) but thinking like a car the bendex isn't engageing also i droped the slinded coupling off the end of the starter before i got a chance to look at it! it's offset onthe inside which side goes to the starter short or long , also one end is beveled? ( the stater does not seem weak) can you inform me with any thing that i missed? maybe explane the basic of this starter system. sorry don't type very well! hope you can understand what i'm trying to say ! thanks rusty

Answer -
The beveled part you are talking about, are you talking abaout the starter clutch?

Answer -
You must be talking about the jackshaft assembly. The beveled part goes inward.
Good luck and happy riding

Answer
You said the battery is weak, so first off you need a good battery. Check your ground cable to make sure it has good contact. Checkt he cable for wear also. You might want to consider replacing them. When you bench tested it and it passed then it cant be the starter. You might want to change the starter relay also, it might be weak
