Motorcycle Repair: Engine cutting out, high octane fuel, fuel starvation

Question
Hi Chris.  I have a 1997 Suzuki Marauder.  It sat in storage without fluids for 4 months during a move this past winter.  I put in a new battery and high octane fuel, and she ran like a champ after I refilled all the fluids.  Then, all of a sudden, she started losing power and cutting out on me one day.  It felt like I lost a cylinder, but both exhaust were hot, and neither plug was fouled.  In idle and low power (<10-15mph in 1st gear), she runs fine.  I cleaned the carbs (even though they were pristine), checked the jets (shich were fine), and adjusted the carbs to idle a little faster.  She ran fine for about 30 minutes, then the same problem occurred.  I suspected fuel starvation, but fuel flowed fine through all the lines, and the pitcock was clear.  I drained the tank, and there was no obstructions in it either.  I've never done work on a fuel filter before...and that's where I'm at now.  It had black residue all over the inner side, so it looks to be the original.  I put ome sas into the intake side, but it filled up quickly, and nothing would flow out the other (exit) side.  I noticed the electical wiring harness, so I wondering if power is needed for flow to go through it...or if it may be clogged.  Is there a way to open up the gold casing?  Anyway, the bike was fine one day, and now I'm stuck rising to work 4 wheels.  Any suggestions?  Thanks, John

Hi John.

You answered your own question here;
(get ready for your "DOH!!" moment)

"I put ome sas into the intake side, but it filled up quickly, and nothing would flow out the other (exit) side."

The fuel filter is clogged.  Replace it. :)

Good luck and ride safe.
