Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha 1981 XV750, starter solenoid, yamaha xv750

Question
Hi Chris, could you please offer any advice on the following?  I have a Yamaha XV750 (1981).  It has a new batery and a new Alternator fitted but when I push the start button it the oil light comes on, yes it wasn't showing before I push the start button, and the starter doesn't turn over...I can only start the bike by crossing the starter solenoid with a screwdriver, yes I know bad practice.  I have tried and tried to find the fault but am at a complete loss.
I appreciate any help you can give at all.
Thank you from New Zealand
Craig

Answer
Hi Craig.

I see one or more of three possibilities.

1) Starter solenoid is dead and needs replacement.

2) Wiring short in the starter circuit.

3) Starter motor contacts need cleaning or starter needs new brushes.

Start by checking those out and let me know what you find.
Good luck and ride safe.
