Question -
I have a 98 Buell with high compression pistons, crame hi4 ignition, big bore cylinders, ported heads, cams, and the works on the engine. I also have a brand new battery and decided to put a start boost relay on it. My problem is that last season i had no problem with the bike starting until i ran the battery down so i got a new one this year. I put an odyssey gel cell battery in it just as the last one i had in it. I charged it and with the charger on it it will turn over, but without the charger on it all the started does is click like the the battery is low. the battery reads fully charged when it does it even. could my starter be bad or could i have a bad battery? Does it sound like there is a dead short somewhere? Thanks for your help.

What kind of compression are you running?
Mike

I am running cp pistons with 20 degree domes which are rated at 11:1. but i have headwork done also. so i would say probablly 10.5:1 after the work. Thanks for your time.

Answer
Since you got the same battery that you had then either the battery is bad or your start boost relay is bad and not letting the bike turn over.
Unless you had the heads build up then you are running the 11:1 compression, which is quit a bit for a stock starter.
Instead of having to buy a battery every year you need to add some compression releases. Spyke has some that fint into the sparkplug holes so you dont have to do any drilling
Good luck and happy riding
