Motorcycle Repair: 76 Sporty/ Kickstarter, kickstarter, kick starter

Question
1976 xlhc. I dont know much history on the bike. It has been a basket case for many years.
My question is about the kick starter. The sprocket cover keeps breaking at the top mounting point. I know this has happened regularly because there are 3 covers in a box and all are broke in the same place. Where should I start looking for the problem? ( I was thinking either the bushings or a bent shaft)
I am going to attempt to put this bike together and this is my first step. I am sure I will need many parts along the way and am looking for a reliable and inexpensive parts supplier- to start with I need a sprocket cover! Can you suggest a parts supplier to fit my needs.
Thanks

Answer
Check your kicker shaft to see if its bent.
As to the parts supplier, check with some shops around you. If they have a Tedds V-twin catalog then they can get parts for you.
Since you are working on a basket case i would suggest getting a service manual for your bike. Tedds sells them too
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
