Motorcycle Repair: Engine Power Loss, honda cbx 750, motorcycle dealer

Question
I have a 1984 Honda CBX 400cc Custom.
The valves in the middle two cyclinders appear to be sticking.  I need
to get the head off and reseat/grind the valves.  However I have been
unable to source a new top end gasket set for this engine.I believe this
model was made only for the Japanese domestic market, and was imported
into UK in the grey area.  I like the bike it has a smaller version of
the old Honda CBX 750 engine.
I posted this on one motorcycle bulletin board, and it was suggested that it would be highly unlikely for the the valves to be sticking.
The symptoms are starting, fires up revs to 4/5 thousand rpm then fades out, push start button again and will usually start up and run ok.  When running engine and power seem fine, no smoke bangs or rattles.  The diagnosis of sticking valves was made by a motorcycle dealer who did my MOT and he said that the pressure on the 2 middle cylinders was half that of the two outer ones.
Any ideas suggestions?
TIA
John

Answer
Hi John.

It is possible for the valves to be sticking, but all you may need is new seats and springs rather than a new head.

Your MOT mechanic should know what he's talking about, so see what he suggests as a less expensive repair than a head regrind or replacement.

Good luck and ride safe.
