Motorcycle Repair: spark plug wire contact, cap screws, shively

Question
Mark,

I have worked on several, used, older (80s) bikes  and almost always find the spark plug wire cap has been twisted off its wire. The previous owner has simply pushes the cap back on the wire. After doing so the bike seems to run okay and it looks normal so they don't mention the problem when negociating the sale. The bike often works because, although it does not form a good connection, it does make some contact with the plug often producing a weak spark. My question is, what is the best way to fix this without buying the complete coil and wire system. The current bike I have with this problem is an 83 spectre with all 4 wires detached. Thanks

Answer
Hi Bill,

Remove the spark plug caps. Cut the secondary leads off about 5mm-10mm back from the ends. This should provide new material for the cap screws to anchor to and will rid the leads of the worn material.

Replace the caps if necessary.

Respectfully,
