Motorcycle Repair: Chris, I have a 97 Yamaha..., yamaha seca, mechanical aptitude

Question
Chris,  I have a 97 Yamaha Seca that has always run well but has
been sitting in a garage for five years. I want to get it to a garage
and get it up and running again. What should I do to fire up the
engine (battery charger, etc.,) and when I take her in what will I
need to have done to her to get her back on the road. Also should I
consider new tires as well?
Thank you in advance for your advice,   Carl

Answer
Hi Carl.

Unless you have no mechanical aptitude, about everything that you will need to do you can do yourself.

You will need to drain and reseal the tank, replace the fuel line, spark plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter, battery and clean the carbs out.  Check all of the seals as best you can and, if possible, inspect the cylinders.  be sure that the pistons haven't siezed from rust.

Also, changing the tires will be required as dry-rot will have set in.

The shop will know what else to check for if I missed anything.

Good luck and ride safe.
