Motorcycle Repair: 69 Honda cb450 k2 Starter spins, honda cb450, calgary alberta canada

Question
Bill

I have 69 Honda cb450 the starter clutch engages and then spins free making it very hard to start the motor. I have the springs caps and rollers for it but I'm not sure of the puller to use for the generator flywheel. Its threaded in the center so I'm assuming that it is a 2 piece puller 1 piece threads into the flywheel and another bolt piece threads into that piece.  There is a company on ebay selling a puller set,  would this do the trick                    http://stores.ebay.com/PIT-POSSE   Is their any other advise you can give me to make this job easier.

Thanks

Answer
Brent, it should be this one:

http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/tools/product/flywheel_puller_-_m16_x_1.5_r....  Measure the inside thread diameter to verify before ordering.

For some reason they are a little vague about CB450s, but this listing includes the CB500T, which is the stroked version of the 450. Most motorcycle shops carry a special tool like this in their Motion Pro Catalogs.

A little trick that you might check is that on some of the Honda models, back then, either the front or rear axle threads are the same size/pitch and you can use them for a puller. Just pull the central threaded bolt for the rotor and screw in the puller/axle. Tighten as much as possible, and then give the end of the tool a solid whack with a hammer to pop the rotor off, if it seems to be really stuck. Air impact tools make it much easier and have less tendency to possibly damage the crank bearings, though. DO NOT try a 2 or 3 jaw gear puller! That will damage the rotor laminations.
